Hahndorf Hill Winery’s ChocoVino experience combine chocolate and wine matching experiences. Shaw & Smith Winery

Shaw + Smith began over a long lunch in 1989 when cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith decided to realise a long held dream to make wine together. Pike & Joyce

K1 by Geoff Hardy

Geoff Hardy produces a range of wine, from Shiraz and Semillon/Viognier to the rare Arneis. Many regard K1 as one of Australia’s leading cellar doors, due to its natural beauty and outstanding wines.

Gulf Brewery

Gulf Brewery in Hahndorf’s main street is a microbrewery producing a contemporary range of hand crafted boutique ales, lagers and ciders. You can taste beers at the cellar door and either relax and have a beer by the glass or take away to drink at your leisure.

Prancing Pony Brewery

Prancing Pony Brewery in Totness (between Hahndorf and Mount Barker) uses traditional Southern German fire-brewing methods. Drop into their fun ‘Brewshed’ to watch the brewer at work while sampling the beers and trying some unique and traditional brewery snacks.

Lobethal Bierhaus

The Lobethal Bierhaus includes a small all-grain micro brewery producing award-winning character beers with accompanying cellar door tasting facilities, off-license bottle sales and a restaurant / beer garden with matching beer themed foods built around unique local produce.

Adelaide Hills Sculpture Trail

The Hills Sculpture Trail features 26 contemporary sculptures made by sculptors who travelled to the region from around the world for the biennial Adelaide Hills Sculpture Symposiums. Dotted around the beautiful landscape sculpture locations can be found on Hills Sculpture Trail maps and brochures.

Hahndorf Historic Village

settled in 1839, Hahndorf is Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. Take yourself back in time walking the main street, lined with historic buildings including the Hahndorf Academy – a magnificent heritage building housing gallery exhibitions, a small museum, artist studios and a shop featuring special Sir Hans Heysen’s collections and quality hand crafted local artisan products.

The Cedars

The Cedars’, Hahndorf – This elegant Edwardian property was the home of Australian landscape artist Sir Hans Heysen until his death in 1968. Visitors can see the artist’s studio, a collection of his works and tour the property’s elegant gardens.

Bridgewater Mill

Flour mills were built throughout the Adelaide Hills during the 19th century and historic examples can still be found at Birdwood, Mount Barker, Nairne and Bridgewater, where the giant waterwheel still turns. The Bridgewater Mill houses the historic 1860s flour mill serving regional, seasonal share platters and fresh local organic produce.

UKARIA Cultural Centre & Concert Hall

The Ukaria Concert Hall, part of the Ukaria Cultural Centre at Mount Barker, hosts a series of concerts every year showcasing leading national and international musicians. The new 200 seat auditorium is considered to be one of Australia’s finest chamber music venues with its visually and acoustically impressive design and its setting in the rolling hills just outside Mount Barker.

National Motor Museum

Adelaide Hills Kids’ Food Trail

For some family fun take the kids on an educational Adelaide Hills foodie adventure, introducing processes involved in food production and enjoying the end result. Pick fruit, watch bees making honey, explore a traditional chocolate and confectionery factory and taste artisan cheeses – the region offers some fantastic food experiences for kids – hence the Kids’ Food Trail to help you plan your family epicurean adventure.

Cleland Wildlife Park

Feed kangaroos as they laze, wander wetlands, hold a koala, and immerse yourself amongst over 130 species of Australian wildlife, all just 20 minutes from Adelaide.

Hahndorf Farm Barn

Hahndorf Farm Barn Kids can interact with a range of farm and exotic animals. Having won multiple ‘Tourist Attractions’ SA Tourism Awards, the Hahndorf Farm Barn is a childrens’ farmyard and wildlife park where everyone gets to enjoy hands-on interaction with our friendly animals.

Platform 1 Heritage Farm Railway

The Platform 1 seasonal evening Light and Sound Show depicts early Adelaide Hills German settlement and describes how they forged their farming and family life in this new land. Experience a taste of farm life, ride on the miniature train and enjoy interactive railway displays.

Hahndorf Main Street

Many of the shops in Hahndorf appeal to kids – from the Hahndorf Sweets’ shop and ice creameries to toy shops, fairy garden and shop, puppet shop, and FruChocs shop (South Australia’s iconic confectionary). Australian Minerals is also heaven for kids into minerals, fossils and shells.

Big Rocking Horse

Climb the giant rocking horse that stands six-storeys high, discover the toy factory and shop, and explore the wildlife bush park with native and farm animals.

The Adelaide Hills is blessed with great playgrounds and many outdoor ‘nature play’ locations where fun outdoor activities are tailored to kids but can be enjoyed by the whole family. Gorge Wildlife Park

Beerenberg Strawberries

Strawberry Picking to delight all ages at Beerenberg Farm, Hahndorf – From November through to April. Roam the vast strawberry patch at Beerenberg, foraging enormous sweet strawberries and be sure to browse and taste the incredible array of sauces, relishes and dressings while you’re there.

Cherry Picking

November marks the beginning of the Adelaide Hills cherry season which goes to the end of January depending on location and variety. Growers such as Stella Creek Cherry Farm welcome visitors to purchase from ‘shed doors’ or pick their own. Orchards are detailed in the Cherries SA Cherry Map which also includes tips for picking, storing and cooking cherries (Fresh Cherries planning app available).

Apple & Pear Picking

Magarey Orchard at Coromandel Valley is best known for its amazing pears and has designated open days. Shed door fruit sales are available Mon, Wed-Fri. 9-5pm and are Self-serve, selling second or rough grade pears, apples and plums.

Udder Delights Cheese Cellar

Located in the bustling historic main street of Hahndorf, Udder Delights produces a wide range of milk and goat cow cheeses which are available for tasting plus a dizzying array of cheeses and other gourmet delights are for sale. Enjoy snacks and light meals, fondue experiences or high tea in their licensed cafe, where a raised outdoor dining area overlooks the main street.

Melba’s Chocolate Factory

Melba’s is a must for any family foodie outing in the Hills. Sample delicious chocolate and a truly staggering range of lollies and chocolates. Be captivated watching sweets being made the old fashioned way, enjoy tastings or relax with a fresh cup of coffee in the Café.

Weekend Markets

Find markets selling fresh, mouth-watering produce every weekend in the Adelaide Hills. Fruit, vegetables, art, craft and wine – it’s all there. Almost every weekend, you will find a farmers’ market in one of the many small towns dotted throughout the region. Trestle tables overflow with fresh produce, buckets burst with cut flowers and espresso machines work overtime.


If you just want a pub meal, take your pick from a seriously impressive list of Adelaide Hills establishments and look out for award-winning ciders from the Hills Cider Company. The menus of pubs in Hahndorf reflect their Germanic heritage and you can expect no shortage of wurst, pretzels, sauerkraut and steins at pubs such as the Hahndorf Inn and the German Arms. Other heritage pubs to visit are the Stanely Bridge Tavern, Scenic, Aldgate Pump, Crafers, Blumberg, Stirling and Uraidla Hotels.

Sample some award-winning handmade and produced artisan cheeses at their cellar door and browse through the gallery featuring exclusive giftware and the work of local artists. One of only four cheese makers in Australia licensed to produce raw milk cheese and the only SA cheese maker to make buffalo milk cheese from local buffalo milk! Kris Lloyd’s Artisan range can be purchased at their cellar door.

IGA Hahndorf

IGA Hahndorf  Supermarket, opened in Hahndorf in November 2008 and is a family run business. In addition to supermarket lines, IGA Hahndorf also sources LOCAL & ORGANIC produce, dairy and smallgoods products & FINE FOODS, supporting the locals. IGA Hahndorf also supports local schools and sporting clubs by sponsorship.

Harris Smokehouse

Harris Smokehouse in Hahndorf is a 4th generation; family owned and operated smokehouse. Sourcing high quality Australian raw seafoods, traditional curing methods create a subtle, smokey aroma that doesn’t overpower their products which range from SA yellowtail kingfish and Tasmanian salmon to traditional European style mackerel and kippers.

Rilka’s Real Food

At Rilka’s Healthy Kitchen you can enjoy a three hour cooking class, with Rilka leading you through a new and innovative way to cook – without gluten or added sugar, but with amazing taste. You’ll enjoy a three course meal, or learn to cook breads, pastries & cakes, depending on when you come –or Rilka can do a special class just for you.


Bread making and other sweet creations have been a time-honoured practice in the Hills since the first European settlers arrived. You’ll find traditional bakeries in most towns and villages including Lobethal, Hahndorf, Stirling and Mount Barker.

Nirvana Organic Farm

Nirvana Organic Farm in Heathfield offers a diverse collection of cool climate produce including raspberries, currants and gooseberries in summer, to chestnuts in autumn and early winter – available at the farm gate. Jams and preserves are also for sale and educational farm tours are available covering biodynamics, composting, vegetables and poultry.

Willabrand Fig Picking

Figs can be picked at Willabrand fig orchard at Glen Ewin Estate in Houghton from February to April. Wander the gorgeous terraced fig orchard where figs have been grown for 150 years and pick your fill of fresh figs, or buy quality fig produce including fig jam, chocolate figs and more.

Chocolate @ No. 5’s Chocolaterie and Lounge at Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills will stir your senses …..Melt into a chair and let the indulgent pleasures carry you away as you touch, taste, smell, drip and sip simply divine decadence. Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens

The Mount Lofty Botanic Gardens overlook the Piccadilly Valley featuring displays of cool temperate plants from various geographic regions, which thrive on the eastern slopes of Mount Lofty.
