The Adelaide Hills is a playground for children. From strawberry picking to cuddling koalas, historical chocolate factories to railway adventures, the Hills will keep the most active families occupied. And for adults, it’s an adventure of the tastebuds… with all the cheese, Fruchocs, wine, schnitzels, and farm-to-table plates.

You can have it all in the Adelaide Hills. The only challenge is fitting them all into one weekend. You probably already know the popular attractions like Mount Lofty, Cleland Wildlife Park and Beerenberg Farms, so let’s take a look at five less known activities that you can’t miss

1.   Gorge Wildlife Park

Introduce the kids to animals in an entirely new way: out in the wild! See koalas, wombats, dingos, kangaroos and Tasmanian devils in their natural habitat. Oh, and did we mention, meerkats, monkeys and American alligators? Don’t worry, the kiddies will be safe. Visit the 54-year-old Gorge Wildlife Park

2.   Cherry Picking

Instead of the famous strawberry picking in Hahndorf, head to Harben Vale in Balhannah and pluck a punnet of cherries. Enjoy a healthy snack throughout the day and take home to create a fresh dessert with the kids.

3.   Melba’s Chocolate Factory

If the kids have been good, treat them (and yourself) to a visit to the Hills’ famous chocolate factory, Melba’s. It’s a gorgeous heritage listed building with five different rooms. Wander, taste, learn about the making process and buy your favourites. Melba’s is an educational experience for everyone.

4.   Mount Lofty Adventure Hub

You know about the Woodhouse Activity Centre but have you heard of the Mount Lofty Adventure Hub? Shhhh! It may be the best kept secret in the Adelaide Hills. Best of all, it’s for children AND kids at heart. Get your adrenaline pumping with tree-based ropes, a climbing wall, and a mega swing.

5.   The Labyrinth

Speaking of the Woodhouse, there’s one activity the kids will love: the giant MAZE. Grab a day pass to the Woodhouse and you’ll have unlimited access to the Labyrinth. Have fun, laugh, and watch the kids problem-solve their way out of the maze. Siblings teams? We think so!

Head to the Adelaide Hills for your next family getaway. Use Hahndorf as your HQ and stay at our award-winning Hahndorf Adelaide accommodation. Chat with other guests and our staff to learn more about the best things to do in the Adelaide caravan park accommodation as a family.
